How to win auctions without overpaying
Bidding tips for Bids Kenya auctions: set a maximum, understand the deposit, bid in KSh 50 steps and when auctions close. Plain advice for first-time bidders.
The aim is to win at a price you are happy with, not to win at any price. These habits help.
Before you bid
- Decide your top price before you start, and stick to it.
- Check what similar items sold for, and what a new equivalent would cost. Remember that used items carry some risk.
- Factor in delivery or collection cost and any accessories you would need to buy.
- Remember every bid is a multiple of KSh 50, and a new bid must be higher than the current one by at least KSh 50.
How the deposit works while you bid
Your bid is recorded straight away and goes live once you pay the 10% good-faith deposit with M-Pesa. If you do not win, the deposit is refunded. If you win, it counts toward the price and you pay the remaining 90%.
Your confirmed deposit lets you bid up to 10 times its value. To bid higher, you top up the deposit.
During the auction
- Only bids with a confirmed deposit count toward the displayed price.
- A confirmed bid in the final 60 seconds extends the auction by 60 seconds, so do not assume the clock is final.
- Do not chase. If the price passes your limit, let it go: another listing will come.
Auction or fixed-price classifieds?
In classifieds you negotiate with a seller directly and often pay them directly. In an auction, the market sets the price, and on Bids Kenya payment goes through the platform and the seller is paid after you confirm receipt. The trade-off: auctions can be cheaper, but you cannot know the final price in advance.

What if I win and cannot pay?
You have 72 hours to pay the balance. If you do not pay and no pause condition applies, the deposit is forfeited. Only bid what you intend to pay.
Is there a maximum bid?
Yes. Auctions on Bids Kenya are capped at KSh 25,000.
