Used-item scams in Kenya and M-Pesa payment safety

Common scams when buying and selling used items in Kenya, including fake M-Pesa messages and paying outside the platform, and how Bids Kenya reduces the risk.

Scams follow patterns. If you know the patterns, you can stop most of them.

Warning signs

  • Someone asks you to pay or be paid outside Bids Kenya, by M-Pesa to a personal number or in cash.
  • A “payment received” message that did not come from the platform. Fake confirmation messages are easy to create.
  • Pressure to act quickly, to skip a check, or to confirm receipt before you have the item.
  • A price that is too good to be true, or photos that look copied from elsewhere.
  • A request for your M-Pesa PIN, password, or a one-time code. Nobody legitimate needs these.

How the platform reduces the risk

  • The buyer pays the balance to Bids Kenya, so sellers cannot be paid by fake messages.
  • Sellers send items only after the platform confirms payment, not after a text message.
  • Sellers are paid only after the buyer confirms receipt.
  • Every listing is reviewed before going live, and prohibited items are blocked.

If you think you are being scammed

  • Stop, do not send money or the item, and do not confirm receipt.
  • Keep the messages and photos.
  • Report it using the support page or the report action. If you have been defrauded, also report it to the police.

Frequently asked questions

Will Bids Kenya ever ask for my M-Pesa PIN?

No. Never share your PIN. M-Pesa prompts for it on your own phone only.

A seller asked me to pay them directly. What should I do?

Refuse and report it. Payments outside the platform are not protected.
