Tips for buying collectibles

  • Look closely at the photos for wear, damage, fading and missing parts.
  • Ask the seller where the item came from and for extra photos of markings, labels or signatures.
  • Be careful with rare or valuable claims. Ask for evidence of authenticity, and remember that auctions are capped at KSh 25,000.
  • Agree packaging and delivery with the seller, especially for fragile items.

Tips for selling collectibles

  • Describe the item exactly: title, maker, age, edition and condition, and mention any damage.
  • Photograph it from every side, including markings, labels and flaws.
  • Never describe a reproduction or replica as original. Counterfeits and misrepresented items are not allowed.
  • Pack fragile items carefully and agree delivery with the buyer.

How Bids Kenya protects buyers and sellers

Only genuinely pre-owned items are allowed, and every listing is reviewed before it goes live. Bids start from KSh 500 and every auction is capped at KSh 25,000. A refundable 10% good-faith deposit keeps out time-wasters, and it is returned automatically if you do not win.

Winners pay the balance to Bids Kenya, not the seller. The seller sends the item once payment is confirmed and is paid after you confirm you have received it. Read more in how auctions work, buyer protection and the prohibited items list.

Collectibles: frequently asked questions

What counts as a collectible on Bids Kenya?

Genuinely pre-owned items such as vinyl records, books, vintage items, memorabilia, art and decor, coins, stamps and hobby or model collections. Items must be yours to sell and honestly described.

Are replicas and reproductions allowed?

Only if they are clearly described as replicas or reproductions. Items misrepresented as original, and counterfeits, are not allowed and may be removed.

How do I know a collectible is authentic?

Check the photos and description, and ask the seller for extra photos or proof after you win. If an item is materially different from its listing or is counterfeit, open a dispute before confirming receipt and an administrator will review the evidence.

Can I sell items worth more than KSh 25,000?

No. Every auction on Bids Kenya is capped at KSh 25,000, so the platform is best suited to modestly priced collectibles.

How do I bid on an auction?

Open the collectible auction you like, enter your bid and click Place bid. Your bid is recorded straight away and goes live once you pay a refundable 10% good-faith deposit with M-Pesa from your dashboard.

What is the 10% deposit and do I get it back?

The deposit is a small good-faith (earnest money) payment of 10% of your bid. It keeps out time-wasters. If you do not win, your full deposit is refunded to your M-Pesa as soon as the auction closes. If you win, it counts toward the price and you pay the remaining 90%.

How and when do I pay if I win?

You pay the remaining 90% to Bids Kenya through M-Pesa within 72 hours. The seller sends the item only after your payment is confirmed, and the seller is paid only after you confirm you have received it.

Is there a limit on prices?

Yes. Bids start from KSh 500 and every auction is capped at KSh 25,000, so Bids Kenya stays a place to pass on pre-owned items at modest prices.
