Tips for buying home appliances
- Ask the seller to show the appliance working in a short video.
- Check the age, power rating and plug type, and make sure it suits your home.
- Ask about repairs, noises, leaks or missing parts, and what accessories are included.
- Large appliances need transport. Agree who arranges and pays for delivery before you pay the balance.
Tips for selling home appliances
- Give the brand, model, age and capacity, and say clearly that it works or what is wrong with it.
- Photograph the appliance, its label and any marks, dents or stains.
- Clean it before you take photos, and remove personal items.
- Say whether collection is possible and who pays for delivery of large items.
How Bids Kenya protects buyers and sellers
Only genuinely pre-owned items are allowed, and every listing is reviewed before it goes live. Bids start from KSh 500 and every auction is capped at KSh 25,000. A refundable 10% good-faith deposit keeps out time-wasters, and it is returned automatically if you do not win.
Winners pay the balance to Bids Kenya, not the seller. The seller sends the item once payment is confirmed and is paid after you confirm you have received it. Read more in how auctions work, buyer protection and the prohibited items list.
Home appliances: frequently asked questions
Can I sell my used fridge, washing machine or microwave?
Yes. Used household and kitchen appliances can be listed for free as long as they are genuinely pre-owned and yours to sell. Say clearly whether the appliance works and describe any faults.
How do I know an appliance works before paying the balance?
After you win, ask the seller for extra photos or a short video showing it working. Asking for proof of condition never puts your deposit at risk.
Who arranges delivery of heavy appliances?
Buyer and seller agree delivery or collection directly, including date, time, location and cost. The plan is saved on both dashboards. Delivery cost is separate from the auction price.
Are new appliances allowed?
No. Only genuinely pre-owned items are allowed. New, unused or new-in-box stock is rejected.
How do I bid on an auction?
Open the appliance auction you like, enter your bid and click Place bid. Your bid is recorded straight away and goes live once you pay a refundable 10% good-faith deposit with M-Pesa from your dashboard.
What is the 10% deposit and do I get it back?
The deposit is a small good-faith (earnest money) payment of 10% of your bid. It keeps out time-wasters. If you do not win, your full deposit is refunded to your M-Pesa as soon as the auction closes. If you win, it counts toward the price and you pay the remaining 90%.
How and when do I pay if I win?
You pay the remaining 90% to Bids Kenya through M-Pesa within 72 hours. The seller sends the item only after your payment is confirmed, and the seller is paid only after you confirm you have received it.
Is there a limit on prices?
Yes. Bids start from KSh 500 and every auction is capped at KSh 25,000, so Bids Kenya stays a place to pass on pre-owned items at modest prices.
